The Castle in the Road – A Poem of Peace and Art

The Castle in the Road

There are places we build not with bricks and mortar, but with silence and memory.
This poem is one such place—a castle standing in the middle of a dusty road,
where roses bloom wild and thrones sit empty, waiting for no king.

To bring this vision to life, I sketched it first in black ink,
capturing the raw lines and shadows of the keep, the winding vines, and the distant hills.
Then, using Krita and my trusted Wacom tablet,
I layered colors—crimson for the roses, gold for the light, and deep blue for the infinite sky above.

Below, you can see the journey from line to light.

Before Coloring – Black Ink Sketch

Black ink drawing of the castle, roses, and thrones

The raw ink sketch – sharp lines, deep shadows, and the quiet geometry of the castle.

After Coloring – Digital Painting with Krita & Wacom

Full-color digital painting of the castle using Krita and Wacom tablet

Color brought to life – roses blaze, skies breathe, and the castle becomes a dream.

The Poem

The Castle in the Road

The road was dust, a fading line
That bled into the sun’s decline,
And there it stood, in grand repose,
A castle in the road’s strange close.

Not built of war, nor kingly dread,
With towers that scraped the heavens’ head,
But stones of quiet, worn and old,
Where whispered secrets, softly told.

Around its base, a fiery band,
The roses grew on either hand—
Not tame, not clipped, but wild and free,
A red and cream infinity.
Their thorns were sharp as memory’s sting,
Yet from each bloom, a bird would sing,
And every petal, soft as prayer,
Fell gently on the drowsy air.

And on the walls, where ivy crept,
The empty thrones of ages slept.
No scepter held, no crown was worn,
No tyrant’s boast, no subject sworn.
They sat in silence, row on row,
Witnesses to the winds that blow,
Each carved from stone of lunar white,
To catch the shadows and the light.

Beyond the keep, no city sprawled,
No smudge of man, no voice that called.
Just meadow-swell and forest deep,
Where nature kept her ancient sleep.
The sky, a dome of liquid blue,
Where clouds were islands drifting through,
And every breath was clean and new,
A paradise of morning dew.

And yes, upon the clearest days,
When sun and stone were caught in rays,
You’d think you saw, beyond the hill,
A place where time was standing still.
A glimpse of heaven, far and fair,
A promise on the fragrant air—
A city not of mortal hands,
Beyond the known, in distant lands.

But when the vision starts to fade,
And doubt returns, and plans are made,
And all the world comes rushing in
With all its noise, its loss, its spin,
Retreat to where the roses grow,
To where the silent thrones all know
That heaven’s not a place to find,
But this still castle in the mind.

For peace is not a distant shore,
A prize to battle for and score.
It is the keep, the rose, the stone,
The kingdom that you build alone.
So let the world its battles rage,
Upon this quiet, hallowed page,
Your castle stands—eternal, true—
A peace of mind, made just for you.
